STAR RATINGS GUIDE

Mind-Blowingly Good

THE BIRDICT

🧡 Please take this review in the spirit in which it is intended, which entails me hyperventilating as I fan-girl scream at you to Get. This. Audiobook. It simply has everything you - yes you - want from a YA dystopian tech-thriller. There are teens controlling the minds of secret agents, dark tech, sinister conspiracies and just a smidge of reluctant romance. It’s snarky, it’s fast-paced and, quite frankly, fun.

💚 If I had to compare this to other works - and let’s face it, I have to - I’d say it’s got the revolutionary undertone of Hunger Games (and more than a bit of Katniss in main character Sil Sarrah), a Minority-Report-ish vibe to the plot and just a smidge of the 1995 cult classic, Hackers.

Big thanks to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton Audio for providing me with an ALC in return for an honest review.

SQUAWKING THE TALK

🎧 Everything about this audiobook simply works. It’s easy to follow without sacrificing on thrills. The dialogue shines in its sarcastic glory and Stephanie Cannon’s interpretation of Sil Sarrah is so vivid and authentic. She comes across as formidable and fiery yet likeable. Zero complaints.

THE BLURB

DO NOT SURRENDER CONTROL.

Eighteen-year-old Sil Sarrah is determined to die a legend. But with only twelve months left before the supercomputer grafted to her brain kills her, Sil's time is quickly running out.

In the ten years she's been rescuing field agents for the Syntex corporation - by commandeering their minds from afar and leading them to safety - Sil hasn't lost a single life. And she's not about to start now.
But when a critical mission goes south, Sil is forced to flee the very company she once called home.

Desperate to prove she's no traitor, Sil infiltrates the Analog Army, an activist faction working to bring Syntex down. Her plan: to win back her employer's trust by destroying the group from within. Instead, she and the Army's reckless leader, Ryder, uncover a horrifying truth that threatens to undo all the good she's ever done.

With her tech rapidly degrading and her new ally keeping dangerous secrets of his own, Sil must find a way to stop Syntex in order to save her friends, her reputation - and maybe even herself.
