STAR RATINGS GUIDE
Gripping and Suspenseful Meets Thought Provoking and Moving
THE BIRDICT
🧡 This is about a plane crash and a hero who saves a child. Ostensibly, it is about solving the mystery of how and why the plane crashed. If this was all the story was about, it would be gripping and suspenseful. And yet there is so much more going on. This is not only what happened before the fall, but about the aftermath.
💚 In the course of uncovering the truth, Hawley examines society and humanity. Characters and plot lines take on the mantle of diverse, important themes, be they privilege, the media or fate. The way this is done is seamless and organic and I loved how it sent my mind on tangents.
💛 This is very much a patchwork of stories, shifting from character to character, plot to plot. It examines very human, often flawed motivations and how these mingle with chance and past events.
SQUAWKING THE TALK
🎧 A simple yet excellent production and a thoroughly fun listen. Hawley ensures that the character speaking/thinking is always namechecked at the start of their section, while narrator Jeff Harding does a simply phenomenal job portraying each and every one.
🎧 Ideally, the chapter headings would match the written ones rather than being numbered.

THE BLURB
The rich are different. But fate is blind. A private jet plunges into the sea. The only survivors are down-on-his-luck artist Scott Burroughs and JJ Bateman, the four-year-old son of a super-rich TV executive. For saving the boy, Scott is suddenly a hero. And then, as the official investigation is rapidly overtaken by a media frenzy, it seems he may also be a villain. Why was he on the plane in the first place, and why did it crash?
