STAR RATINGS GUIDE

Iā€™m In Limbo On This One

THE BIRDICT

šŸ§” As someone who spends their time escaping into books, I should love the idea of artificial afterlives. And I do love the version of it in the TV series Upload. But thatā€™s a communal, ā€œrealā€ place. This book presents it as one long dream. No thank you. Nevertheless, I do love playing around with the idea, so I was all in.

šŸ’š I did enjoy the sci fi elements, the heaven creation, the moral questions in the first half of the book to a 3 star level. It was good, but didnā€™t go deep enough. It was the second half with its murdery thrillerishness and delving into minds that gripped me. Iā€™d have given this 4 stars, except there was one element I couldnā€™t get pastā€¦

šŸ’œ I am not an Isobel fan. There. I typed it. Half the time she was portrayed as fragile and in need of protection. And the other she was aggressive and rude. Pick a lane.

SQUAWKING THE TALK

šŸŽ§ Imogen Church has a beautiful voice (you can see why she was nominated for an Audie Award) and I thought her portrayals of all characters both male and female were spot on. Great Irish accent and a very convincing Jarek. Isobelā€™s voice was a bit too dream-like, but I can accept it as part of the overall ā€œheavenā€ atmosphere.

šŸŽ§ It was very easy to listen to this throughout my day. Clear narration, easy plot to follow and spotless production.

The Memory Chamber

THE BLURB

The perfect afterlife or a never-ending nightmare?

Isobel has it all: a steady relationship, the immaculate home and her dream job. Life, and even death, is completely under her control. For Isobel's generation death no longer means oblivion, thanks to firms like her employer, Oakley Associates. Isobel is their top Heaven Architect, crafting perfect afterlives for her clients: artificial paradises of the mind built from the memories they treasure most.

Then Isobel meets handsome client Jarek. Her disciplined life gives way to something passionate and extreme, and Isobel jeopardises everything to embark on an affair with a terminally ill - and married - man. When Jarek posthumously becomes the prime suspect in a murder that took place just before his death, Isobel is forced to prove his innocence.

Jarek's afterlife faces termination if the real culprit cannot be found. But as Isobel stumbles upon the darker side of the work she so passionately believes in, she can trust no-one with what she finds.

Set in the near future, this thrilling and original story vaults the listener into a world that is terrifyingly close to our own, where we can avoid everything we fear - even death itself. But can we ever escape the truth?
