STAR RATINGS GUIDE

Love, love, love.

THE BIRDICT

🧡 This is one of my favourite books. I was immediately drawn in by the vivid writing; writing that painted such a real world to me and gripped by the premise. I love the characters' flaws and the little comic elements such as the cat. The romantic elements in the book are beautifully subtle, while the combat is carefully crafted.

💙 If you, like me, end this book wanting more, you have two more instalments and the film adaptations to keep you busy. That's the good news. The bad news is, I have yet to find something quite as good in the same way.

SQUAWKING THE TALK

🎧 When I fell in love with this it was narrated by Carolyn McCormick. Her performance was understatedly sinister. Some saw at as stilted, but all I know is, when the film came out, it mirrored my experience exactly. It has since been re-released with the voice of Tatiana Maslany, who is excellent.

The Hunger Games

THE BLURB

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning?

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
